Notturno

"Rosi’s individual images are always calm and often acutely beautiful... But his secret weapon is juxtaposition, and as these seemingly disparate scenarios unfold one after the other, a sense of deeper meaning gradually accrues"
Daily Telegraph

“Devastating and surprisingly delicate” The New York Times

BIFA Nominated for Best International Independent Film

Shortlisted for Best Documentary Feature for the 93rd Academy Awards®

MUBI, the global distributor and curated film streaming service, has launched the UK trailer for Gianfranco Rosi’s striking and powerful new film NOTTURNO, which will be released exclusively on MUBI from 5 March 2021 in the UK, Ireland, India, and Latin America.

The film, which premiered and won three awards at the Venice Film Festival before screening at the Toronto Film Festival, the New York Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival is the latest work from Gianfranco Rosi, the filmmaker behind the Berlin Golden Bear winning film FIRE AT SEA.

NOTTURNO is a sweeping depiction of three turbulent years in the heart of Middle Eastern war zones, observing the devastating toll being taken on civilian populations who have no choice but to live on the frontlines. As intimate as it is profoundly moving, the film is an urgent cinematic achievement from a master of the documentary form.

Told using footage captured from the borders of Iran, Kurdistan, Syria and Lebanon, the film depicts the everyday struggles of people attempting to rebuild their lives amongst the devastating effects of civil wars, dictatorships, foreign invasions, and the deadly presence of ISIS. Rosi foregrounds simple acts of humanity found within the most violent of settings, from a Tazisi mother’s anguish over her kidnapped daughter, to female Peshmerga guerrillas defending their battle stations, and a teenager’s daily toil to feed his family.

Utilising breathtaking cinematography, NOTTURNO is a staggering cinematic journey of intimate moments and luminous images, told with compassion, grace and humanism. Rosi’s latest gives voice to a human drama that transcends geographical divisions.

NOTTURNO is released on MUBI from 5 March 2021 in the UK, Ireland, India, and Latin America.

Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch Will Reportedly Be The Main Focus Of Phase 4

Within the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wanda Maximoff has had a tough time of things, to put it lightly. Orphaned as a child and experimented on by HYDRA, she then lost her brother in the Battle of Sokovia, fell in love with a synthezoid before watching him die twice, and now finds herself being manipulated by a witch in the fictional reality she created for herself to escape all of this trauma.

A New Version Of The Running Man Is In Development

The wave of movies and television shows based on Stephen King properties shows no sign of ending, and it seems that this will include even more reboots as after Pet Sematary back in the spring, we could now be getting a new version of The Running ManThe 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle represented a loose adaptation of King’s original book, which was written under his pseudonym of Richard Bachman, and according to sources close to We Got This Covered – the same ones who told us the leads in Ghostbusters 3 would be young teens, and that Jonah Hill would be starring in The Batman – a remake is now in the early stages development.

Unfortunately, we weren’t told which studio is handling it and domestic and international rights for the pic are heavily segmented. You see, TriStar Pictures (now Sony) had a theatrical release in 1987, but Lionsgate were behind a Blu-ray release in the 2010s. Whether or not the decision to remake the movie has anything to do with the copyright issue for 1980s properties we recently reported on is also unclear, at least at this early stage.

No More Truth Seekers - Damn!

“It’s a massive kick in the willy.” That’s how Nick Frost has described Amazon Prime Video’s decision to cancel his ghost-hunting comedy Truth Seekers after just a single season.

Frost, who co-wrote the series with Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead collaborator Simon Pegg, announced the cancelation on Instagram. “Sadly, Truth Seekers will not be returning for a second season. Truth Seekers has not been renewed, which is a massive kick in the willy for me,” he said in a video message to his 447,000 followers.

“We really put our all into this – our heart and soul, and blood in some cases, so to not come back is really sad for us. It’s a shame. I think we had lots of lovely ghost stories to tell – stories that will remain now untold. If you liked the show, thank you. And if you didn’t, are you happy now? Happy now?”

After leaving L.A., and making only one public appearance since — on a widely condemned mental illness episode of 'Dr. Phil' — the complicated actress sat down for a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter about her legacy and the trauma of the Stanley Kubrick film: "To wake and realize that you had to cry all day, I don’t know how I did it."

Out on the tranquil banks of a river in Texas Hill Country, Shelley Duvall pulls up in a white Toyota 4Runner. Her favorite place to sit is in the driver's seat. It's also the only place to sit: The rest of the car is filled from floor to roof with a crush of acquisitions, including a bucket of plastic silverware, a jar of Green Giant sliced mushrooms and a bouquet of silk roses. Duvall, 71, passes entire days in her car, chatting with locals and snacking on takeout food. She shares a home in the area with Dan Gilroy, 76, a member of the early Madonna band Breakfast Club. Gilroy was briefly romantically linked to the singer but has been with Duvall since 1989, the two having fallen in love while co-starring in the Disney Channel movie Mother Goose Rock 'n' Rhyme. Produced by Duvall, it featured an all-star cast (including Duvall's former boyfriend Paul Simon) and has become an abiding cultural touchstone among millennials.

There's little chance that any passersby would recognize Duvall as Little Bo Peep from that movie — or, for that matter, as Wendy Torrance from The Shining, the part for which she is best known. Her hair has thinned and grayed, her breathy, Minnie Mouse voice gone gravelly (she chain-smokes Parliaments) and her trademark stick figure — the one she used to full advantage playing Olive Oyl in Robert Altman's Popeye — has filled out. But there are tells. Her eyes still sparkle, even from a distance. And her toothy grin is warm and familiar.

Duvall arrives making jokes and raving about the cherry scones at the cafe next door. A waitress skips down the steps with one in hand and passes it to her through the car window. "Heaven," Duvall says as she takes a bite. Later, the waitress, Kristina Keller, a 50-something with a Texas twang, pulls me aside. "I'm not sure who you are," she says. "But out here amongst these rural Hill Country communities, we look out for each other and we take care of each other. Does that make sense?"
